Think Local, Buy Local | By Chelsey Daley

This post is presented by Chelsey Daley of Sequoia Fredericton

There is no denying that the internet makes shopping easy- you can quickly compare prices and have something delivered to your door with the click of a button from the comfort of your couch.  This makes the process very impersonal. There’s no shop owner or employee to give you special advice, help, or tips. There’s no one to give you follow up help in person, should you have any problems with your product. There’s also the potential psychological and emotional problems associated with the ease of people buying online. Impulsive buying, addiction, overspending, and debt-related issues are all potential risks.

Tom Hodgkinson said “The terrible thing about the Internet and Amazon is that they take  the magic and happy chaos out of book shopping. The Internet might give you what you want, but it won’t give you what you need.”

So why shop local?

Simply put local businesses need you, they count on your support in order to stay afloat and every transaction is precious and appreciated. So when deciding where you spend your hard-earned dollars on tonight’s dinner or a gift for a friend, consider the benefits of turning to local, independently owned businesses within your community. We are so lucky in Fredericton to have an abundance of beautiful locally owned businesses.

If you still aren’t convinced here a a few reasons to choose local and some tips to make it an easy choice.

  1. Money spent at a local business helps to boost the local economy and stays within the community.
  2. Local businesses are owned and operated by your neighbours! Employees and owners care about the well-being of the community and its future.
  3. Local businesses are more accountable to customers and are quick to help the community. Always donating to fundraisers, events and non-profits.
  4. Supporting local benefits the environment as most local businesses have a rather small carbon foot print in comparison to the “Big Box Stores”.
  5. One thing people love about Sequoia is that we sell “one-off gifts / items” items that are made locally and aren’t available elsewhere.
  6. Local businesses love to help other local businesses, small brands, service providers, farms, young entrepreneurs etc.
  7. Customer service is better. Local businesses often hire people with more specific product expertise for better customer service.
  8. YOU matter more. Small businesses treat their customers with respect and make you feel welcomed and valued. We understand that every time you make a purchase you are essentially “voting with your wallet”. A purchase at Sequoia is a vote for Sequoia and we appreciate every transaction.

I understand that it isn’t always the easiest or most convenient, but here are some some tips and tricks to help you shop local more often.

  1. Try a local restaurant every second night out.
  2. Purchase a birthday gift at a local shop.
  3. Join a local gym.
  4. Try to find a local mechanic.
  5. Make it to the weekly markets.
  6. Try “Small Business Saturdays” or “Shop Local Weekends”.

When you shop local you are individually stimulating the local economy with your support and in turn, helping shape your community’s unique character and personality. Shop local and you’ll be making a personal investment in your neighbourhood and community.

Hi everyone! My name is Chelsey Daley and while originally from Moncton, NB, I have been calling Fredericton home for the past 5 years. I graduated from St Thomas University in 2015 and  married my high school sweetheart the same year.  In 2017 I decide to dive into the world of entrepreneurship and opened Sequoia, a successful health food store in the heart of downtown Fredericton.

2018 has been one of the most amazing years yet – I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl! So now I have joined all of you, in this wonderful and crazy journey called Motherhood!

Most recently, I became a Registered Holistic Weight loss Expert! I will be offering an online program for women who are looking to grow their skills and knowledge in nutrition, wellness & business all while creating a healthy life and helping others to do the same.

When I’m not at the store, you will find me spending time with my family, running with my dog, and enjoying the outdoors. I’m passionate about wellness, nutrition, and fitness and hope to inspire other boss moms along my journey.
