Kid’s Bathrooms | By New View Designs By Laurie Cole

This post is presented by New View Designs By Laurie Cole

Whether you’re building new or renovating your existing home, well thought out kid’s spaces (especially bathrooms) are vital to keep everyday life functional and well kept! Easy to use storage solutions, use of fun colours and bold patterns, and forgiving materials like textured countertops are great ways to keep the bathroom looking great while maintaining order. No matter what end of the spectrum you find yourself: small updates or total overhaul, I’ve got you covered with some of my top recommendations.

Teaching kids to hold a routine AND clean up after themselves is definitely a daunting task! Keep it simple by adding a tray to the counter to house personal items. Try to keep everyday items within reach and easy for the kids to see. Try not to be afraid of open storage, either. Not only can this be aesthetically pleasing, but it also teaches our children personal responsibility by contributing to the tidyness of the household. Tidying up may seem like a simple chore, but it also manifests an appreciation for the work that goes into a task and shows them to appreciate the spaces they live in.

A childs’ morning spent getting ready for the day should be a fun and motivating experience and being stimulated with bursts of colour is a great way to brighten their mood first thing in the morning! Not everyone is fond of jumping out of their comfort zone, so add some interesting knobs or hooks in the bathroom as an easy way to bring personality to the area. Many people restrain from using bold colours but remember, paint colours are easy to change. This example shows use of a bright blue vanity with white butterfly-shaped knobs, the blue was matched in the lighting and textiles. The next, equally beautiful bathroom shows mint blue walls and a white vanity. This time the blue was added onto the cabinet in a subtle way with blue glass knobs.

Durability is important when designing kid’s bathrooms, there’s no doubt about that one! If going the solid surface route for countertops is not an option, you can opt for a hi-def laminate with a textured/ forgiving surface. Laminate has come a long way in recent years and many of the new patterns even resemble real wood grains or concrete. Choosing a textured surface can help to hide any inevitable chips, scratches, spots, or stains due to its forgiving nature.

It starts with an idea; dive right in or start small and build upon your design! Use small accessories like knobs, hooks, or shower curtains to add a touch of personality. Paint the walls, be daring and try out a new cabinet colour, or update your countertops. Invest in some storage solutions that can add both style and function to the room. Consider how your family uses the space already and create a list of improvements that could be made. A well-designed space can help get the entire family on board with the household chores – even the little ones!
