Keep Calm And Hire A Designer | By Laurie Cole

As a busy mom hiring a professional to help you design your dream space may seem like an unnecessary expense. Whether you’re on maternity leave, a stay at home mom or working outside the home; anything to do with design usually goes to the bottom of the list. With all the Pinterest, DIY posts and HGTV shows – why can’t you just do it yourself? Sure, you have good taste, know what you like, know what you want but and here’s the issue: – wait for it – in your crazy life of night feedings, cleaning up spit, dirty diapers, bedtime stories, 500 pounds of laundry, swim lessons and playdates; do you have the time to properly evaluate what you want out of the space? How you want it to function, and how you want it to look? Do you have the know how to generate the plan and more importantly, implement it? How many of you have had plans to redo-a room – only to find that it’s five years later, styles and trends have changed not to mention your lifestyle and it’s STILL not done. What about all those years you have lived with a dysfunctional laundry room, where you’ve put up with piles of clothes, mismatched socks UGH! and disorganization, creating an overall sense of stress and frustration every time you spend time in that room.

We know a guy. A designer’s objective is to get to know the client, their lifestyle and how they want their space to function. While you barely have time to get to the gym or have a much-needed night out with your girlfriends, designers have the experience and the resources to execute a plan that is especially designed for you and your life. If there’s a light fixture you saw once in a magazine two months ago and you simply must have it, we know a guy, who knows a guy who can likely get it for you. We spend our days fostering relationships, building rapport and finding the best options for you and your needs.

Wake me up when it’s done. When looking at cost, think about the time it takes to research and plan a room, and find cost effective ways to implement it. While designer furniture and accessories are great; contrary to popular belief, designers are trained to work within a client’s budget and try to find cost effective ways to achieve what the client wants. Yes, we do recommend some key pieces that are important to spend your money on but we may also recommend pieces that don’t break the bank, giving you the same look for less. It’s all about balance and in the end a designer’s main goal is to give the client a space that they will LOVE and feel good in all within a reasonable budget. When you live in a space you love, AND gives you a sense of calm, you will feel better about yourself. Trust me.

Trained eye. Big solutions.  One of my clients is a busy working mom, an entrepreneur and has awesome taste. She should, she runs her own online furniture company, Modern Komfort. She has access to all the latest trends and has a pile of knowledge on furniture and styles. She is not however, and I quote her” a designer”. She hired us to help her design and renovate her dysfunctional laundry room and powder room. We sat down with her and made a list of all her absolute musts. After a few meetings, we got a real sense of her design style. From there we developed a floor plan and came up with options to create more space.

By determining style first; we created a neutral, modern space with carefully planned pops of color. All with being budget conscious with up to date materials. We designed custom cabinets to store seldom used appliances, added a closet for her vacuum, brooms and mops and still had room for additional storage for kid’s mittens & hats. With a built a bench incorporated she has extra space for footwear, hooks for extras coats, overhead storage and a place for the kids to sit while getting suited up the great outdoors. We installed a counter for folding her laundry with extra storage above. We updated the small bathroom by installing a custom vanity and added elements that tie it all together. We also installed LED lighting for long term use. (when you’re a busy family – who has time to change light bulbs all the time!) Just like everyone else, she had a budget and we worked within that. She now has a functional, fun and updated space to accommodate her growing family.
